The history of the ancient city Assos, which is located Behramkale village of Ayvacık district of the city Canakkale, is dated back to the 6th century before Christ. The city was built on a volcanic hill, between andesite rocks and 236 meters above the sea level. During the building process, those andesite rocks were used.

The ancient city of Assos had been surrounded by 20-meter high city walls of which length was 3.200 meters. Important places in the city were Necropolis, Temple of Athena, Amphitheater and Agora.

There are two entrance gates for visitors in the area. One of them can be reached by passing through the village and it takes you to the Temple of Athena on the top, and the other one is the old west gate that can be seen on the way to the harbor.

You can visit the ancient city in summer or in winter. Between April 15 and October 2, it is open between 8:00am - 8:00pm and between October 3 and April 14, the ancient city is open for visits between 8:00am - 5:00pm.

In the summer time, archeological digging works go on and just underneath the ancient city of Assos, there is the ancient harbor. There are different hotels and touristic facilities. If you wish, after you visit the ancient city, you can have your coffee or tea in the ancient harbor area or you can stay in the hotels there.
